グランプリの「Press-A」は正方形の発泡スチロール板を重ねた上にガラス板を乗せ、ガラス板の裏側にビニール袋を撮影し写真製版した映像をシルクスクリーンで定着したものである。白い発泡スチロール板は映像を際立たせるために重ねられているが、無機的な映像が不思議な視覚的効果を生んで新鮮であった。

薄いポリエチレンの袋で包んだ物体に光をあて、黒一色の背景から浮かび上がらせたイメージは、ガラスを通して下から台座の白を透かして見せることにより、その闇の中に浮遊するような透明な存在感を、すみずみまで見事に示している。ここではガラスや発泡スチロールという素材の使用が、単なる悠意的な実験に終わらず、透明感のある表現に即した必然的な手段として、豊かな効果を上げているのである。

版画を超える版画は可能か

 

版画の公募コンクールは多いが、現代美術に力を入れている西武美術館が自ら新進版画家の発掘に乗りだしたという「西武美術館版画大賞展」が企画された。大賞の曽根さんの作品は方形のガラスの裏側にシルクスクリーンでビニール袋に入った水の写真を転写、それを発泡スチロールを重ねた台の上に水平に置いたもの。黒一色の背景から浮上する圧縮された水のイメージがみずみずしく、版画形式を破って新鮮である。実験と作品かのぎりぎりの試みだが、透明感のある表現の成功が評価されたのであろう。

"Press-A" which was received the Grand Prize of Print (Seibu Museum of Art, Tokyo) is put the glass plate on the top of several thickness of squared styrofoam plates. The photo of the plastic bag was printed with silkscreen on the backside of that glass plate. The white styrofoam plates were superimposed to accentuate the photo, as it was fresh by the inorganic reflection which makes a strange visual effect.

By showing the white pedestal through the glass from the bottom, the image which was floated from the black background by illuminating the light on an object wrapped in a thin polyethylene bag shows the floating transparency presence cleary in the darkness.

In this work, the use of materials such as glass and styrofoam is not ended in the arbitrary experiment, but it is very effective as the necessary way to express the sense of transparency.
